[Introduction]

I’ve had an intense passion for these strange little haiku for awhile. If you were to ask where the idea to start writing them came from, I’m afraid you and I both would have to scour the cosmos, because it’s a mystery to me as well. I suppose what has drawn me so deeply to the English haiku format this past year that I’ve started writing them is that I’ve realized that essentially, they’re condensed stories.

The stories themselves are unfortunate literary abortions – they are underdeveloped and abandoned as full adventures. They can’t become complete, ever, yet it is only justice that these half-formed creatures have their say. These stories on the brink of an early death only have a handful of words, but they so clearly imply many, many worlds.

Blood Ballet and Paradox Phenomena are two combined collections of haiku with the theme of “unfortunate escape”. Freedom from bondage only possible by death… Freedom from the night only to fall further down to Hell. Escape that comes at a far worse cost.

These are heavily inspired by films with themes of ironic fatality, especially giallo and psychological horror films, as well as a few stray images that had shown up behind my eyes to haunt me without warning. The inspirations from nowhere are the best and the worst simultaneously – the best because well, look at the work we derive from them… but the worst because we know that we are the scientists behind the monsters, with all intention to love them not despite the fact that they are disturbing, but because.

[Blood Ballet]

1-----

Shatter to marrow
Mania, a blood ballet
Shudder in the bones

2-----

Life of raw terror
Grub worms cover the mirror
Squirm like gut tunnels

3-----

No capacity
Emptiness without purpose
An affront to God

4-----

Slit-throat scissor-blades
Arteries are live geysers
Under flesh pressure

5-----

Naked in steel tub
Fermenting pus and blood seeped
From my stillborn corpse

6-----

The occult chill stabs
Through network of thin nerve strands
Silence wakes the ghoul

7-----

Vengeance-seeking dead
Surround my prison of screens
My hand-painted tomb

8-----

The great manic waltz
To contagious pathos, plague,
Digestion of blood

9-----

Sub-normal laughter
From lungs buried in concrete
Preserved but provoked

10-----

Natal secretion
Down which runs brutal voltage
Masochistic shock

11-----

My hesitant trust
You steal always, you dissolve
Me like a fruit fly

12-----

Rosin pool of shame
Autumnal drops of forest
The portal of roots

13-----

Virginal thrombus
Untapped ecstasy, martyr
To core rot and spoil

14-----

One-eyed angel egg
Splatters into pearlescent,
Malformed white fetus

15-----

Skin gowns and hotels
Combustible nostalgia
Hear horses sing it

16-----

The clock is ticking.
Was it worth the blood? Or is
It all down the drain?

17-----

Glance of glyceride
Soulless as envy, slow and
Frigid as glacier

18-----

Pus-filled wounds rupture
From love and their spillage spawns
Sweet mushrooms and ferns

19-----

Heartstring concerto
Pleasure into the abyss
Blood-clouded waters

20-----

Brothers I once loved
Undead with scalps of maggots
All dinge and corpse bloat

21-----

Innocent bondage
Pink lips speak sensual pain
Juxtaposition

22-----

Smothered in the sand
Crushed in the hourglass cinch
Like salt and mica

23-----

Remnants of small wars
Stronghold shell, tomb of the fields
Mankind’s offering

24-----

Rotating wildly
Amputee machine struggles
Against its restraints

25-----

Opera miasma
Thick seepage webs the victims
For conjoined horror

26-----

The pit of hand-raised
Pathologic animals
Raw meat ripped from flesh

27-----

Blood blots on parchment
The comfort of suicide
Until bones beckon

28-----

Ear-splitting silence
In the padded corner writhes
Rejected half-born

29-----

Cuts on chained woman
Thin wounds which speak centuries
Decay of virtue

30-----

Dance of impaling
Sword punctures stomach lining
The sunlight burns out

[Paradox Phenomena]

31-----

Inverted teeth smile
Imperfect as undying
Buds of nature’s womb

32-----

Internal coffin
Narrow cave of fruitless dreams
Bare isolation

33-----

Chase me down to Hell
With flayed feet and concrete mask
Strike me like nightmares

34-----

Human brain luncheon
Waits at my table for me
Steeping in strange soup

35-----

Forest of plastic
Mangled like a lonely child
Under apple tree

36-----

Court of indigo
Always you return, always
To torture my dreams

37-----

Contemporary
Madness, darkness calls from far
Endless corridor

38-----

Red-curtained theatre
Repetitive discomfort
Certain vertigo

39-----

Revenge harlequin
Stockings of briar and thorn
Doll joints bleed and crack

40-----

The glass harmonic
Eerie prelude in mirrored,
Desolate hallways

41-----

Organs churn a life
In secret beneath the grass
Softly, a heart beats

42-----

Tufts of fine cirrus
Encase me as I escape
Mechanized coma

43-----

Blood eyes in window
Invisible but potent
Distant stays real love

44-----

Mummified bazaar
Shapeless, motionless bodies
Withering to null

45-----

Deep in the stone drain
Motes swarm around an eyeball
Floating in mire

46-----

The funnel of vines
Penetrates the wood flora
An unknown hex trap

47-----

The four walls of bliss
Trapped in a negative space
Conscious, bodyless

48-----

Decay and live mold
Roach colonies addicted
To the tan lead paint

49-----

Black cord, deep navel
Stark white room, a blood fetor
The stench of the loop

50-----

Consumers chew fat,
Greased gruel of their own children
Happy-time gourmet

51-----

Dogs hanging from branch
Swing on nooses like scarecrows
Wavering, strangling

52-----

Phantoms of morbid
Trickle in like discontent
Into vampire house

53-----

Hidden in willow
A blank paper face peers toward
A distant child’s corpse

54-----

Stained-glass lattice door
Witchcraft and seared meat leaks out
Atmosphere turns sour

55-----

Beware the dark hunt
Reap and glean of fertile maids
God of miscarriage

56-----

Mouthless smothering
Killing time by suffering
Breathe not to be free

57-----

Winter fluorescence
Cold passion in shuttered home
Chased into darkness

58-----

Dead lover sips milk
Encircled by velvet rose
Narcotic currants

59-----

Corona of dream
My love waits in torture court
To split into stars

60-----

Strange die together
Paradox phenomena
Army of zero
