AUTHOR’S NOTE

There are things you can never really understand. Whether it is the surprisingly strong sense of nostalgia you get after you watch the sun drift down past the horizon, or the dream-like sensation you get when you go on a long lonely walk; you never really understand where it is coming from.

Likewise, we never really understand dreams. The lucid atmospheres, soft and hard shadows alike… We don’t know why we wake up feeling like we’ve lost something. Those nonsensical conversations; beautiful and mysterious. The sudden shift in the tone reminds us, time and time again, that life is full of surprises.

Readers, you can expect this poem collection to be bizarre and confusing. But, rest assured, there’s a story behind every single one of them. A story that deals with guilt, grief and love. That story is called When Dreams Awaken. I do hope that by indulging in these poems, you find it in your interests to look forward to the book.

Also included in this book, are poems I have created for my other novels and books.

Least but not last, thank you for choosing to read this poem collection. Feel free to leave a review, a message or criticism. Enjoy the short journey.

A COLLISION OF DREAMS (PROLOGUE)

The stars shone for us.

That night, when the worlds collided, the stars congratulated us;

The stars of a clearer, brighter night sky.

Have you seen a horizon so beautiful?

The stars shone for us.

That moment when I found you sitting by the satin lake,

The stars witnessed your shy, hopeful smile;

I never felt so fulfilled in my life.

Those memories will never leave us;

That night, when the stars shone for our touch.

When the lake invited us over to its soft bank.

Remember what the sand felt like under your feet?

We knew each other the moment our eyes met,

I couldn’t utter a word.

But I’ve never felt so satisfied with the conversation we had.

The breeze will forever carry on the mystery.

The stars, oh how they spoke to us,

Ushering us forward into the deep lake;

We didn’t want to breathe,

We just wanted to drown in the fantasy.

That night, when the worlds collided.

That night, when our dreams became one.

THE GATEWAY TO YOU

The teary wake that shakes the landscape,

The bright red banner that spreads across the sky,

There is no way out.

And for a moment,

Just for that one moment,

We are all trapped within the grasp of time;

Inside a clock that doesn’t move,

Within gears that doesn’t move.

The clockwork will take you there,

For time is a puzzle.

Alas, the sky turns nocturnal blue.

The sky is our limit tonight.

Where will I find you tonight?

Down by the soft sand bank lit by the moon,

The huge crescent that never seems to grow any smaller.

You, with your silken hair shyly covering your shoulders,

Your face so sharply highlighted by that smile;

We shall look on tonight.

THE JOY ON OUR FACES

There you are again,

Leaning by the boulder,

Your eyes lost towards the lake,

The water flooding around your ankles.

You turn to look at me

Smiling so shyly,

I can’t help but laugh.

We have no voice;

Yet we talk so immensely.

Writing our thoughts down,

Carving the words on the sand…

The dust rises into the air;

Glowing, sparkling, voicing thoughts they own

How could I be this happy?

How could the world be so calm?

How can we just understand each other without those words?

Maybe we’ll know someday.

Maybe not.

Slowly, your toe pushes at the sand;

Your name on the sand.

Fishes leap out of water,

Decorating the lake as they plop back down.

Our thoughts intertwine under the moonlight.

I know your name, and you know mine.

We know we belong together;

Here, forever.

Our names written on the sand,

Our joy, on our faces.

The fishes celebrating our happiness.

Yes, we belong together;

You and I, we do.

HIDDEN IN YOUR SMILE

Such a hushed landscape.

We walk hand in hand

Past a glorified lake and into the wilderness,

Where shadows overcome us.

I feel your concern;

Your heart beats faster,

And your eyes glint.

I feel your fear;

Your grip tightens on my hand,

Giving me a pleading look.

And all I can do is smile,

All I can do is show you the way;

Into the forest lit by the night,

Where beautiful creatures hunt.

And in the vivid river,

A giant tortoise awaits our approach.

The scenery astounds us over and over.

It reminds me of a beauty

Hidden deep in your smile,

One the most cryptic to solve;

For it is a puzzle,

That only I can see.

WONDERING TOGETHER

I’ve come to see you again;

Travelling through time and sleep.

I’ve come far and with hope,

With happiness coursing through me.

I see you waiting for me.

Your hair flowing in the breeze,

Your skirt swimming in the water,

Your eyes fixed on the stars above.

Oh, why do you weep?

Why do tears fall down your cheeks?

You won’t tell me, I know.

I won’t leave you, you know.

The two of us in the water;

Looking on and deep,

Watching and wondering…

Why are we dreaming?

Why, indeed?

THE SHAPE OF DEATH

Don’t you fly away, little crow,

For you know not what awaits you.

Don’t you take flight for the glory of it,

For you know not when it comes.

Nameless and faceless as it is,

Hopeless and merciless as it sounds,

You know not when death comes

Knocking on your door.

Don’t you fly away, little crow;

With no safe passage to your land.

Don’t you spread your wings and glide down

To a wicked trap of a lost soul.

Woven in your fate,

Somewhere along the lines,

Hidden even to you.

It remains a path to be taken.

When the time comes;

There’s no escaping it.

When death takes shape,

When it takes name,

There’s no escaping it.

NEVER LETTING GO

The beauty of the night,

The chill of the soft breeze,

The glittery blue sky

And the light of the moon.

They never cease to amaze me.

We could swim in this river,

Through and through.

Never letting go of our joy,

Never letting go.

There’s so much to be seen,

In that smile of yours,

In those soft lips

And those alluring eyes.

I could swim with you forever,

Through and through.

Never letting go of my spirit,

Never letting go.

You bring out the joy.

You’re the bringer of harmony.

You’re the reason I can be happy again.

We could swim together,

Through and through.

In this river we call life,

Never letting go.

MEMEORIES FROM A HAPPIER PLACE

Farewells are hard.

People call them funerals,

But I see them for what they really are;

A one-and-only goodbye for a lost soul.

How can you just let go so easily?

While I find myself rooted to the earth,

Unable to move on from this pit of darkness;

I cannot say goodbye.

Why do you tell me to let go?

I’m not ready to lose these feelings,

I find myself going through those memories;

Memories from a happy place.

When did you grow so much?

I’ve always been one step behind

Unable to catch up,

Unable to move on.

Stuck in these memories;

Memories from a happy place.

Maybe one day you’ll understand too.

Maybe you’ll notice it too,

What we went through back then,

What we saw that day,

The memories we didn’t let go;

That they made us stronger too.

Yes, those memories,

Memories from a happy place.

I don’t want to let go.

And maybe it’s what we need too.

The memories from way back when,

The memories you left behind

And I was left to hold on to.

When did I grow so much,

Leaving you one step behind?

I just didn’t let go.

Those memories;

They made me who I am,

Who I wanted to be.

Those memories,

Those beautiful memories;

Memories from a happier place.

WHERE THE WORLD IS SMALL

Here, where it’s calm,

My head stays crystal clear,

My steps feel light as feathers.

Here, where you are,

My heart starts fluttering.

My skin starts tingling,

Here, where we are one.

And here, where only our love matters;

We can forget our troubles,

We can smile and laugh,

I can watch you all night long,

While you celebrate

The resonance of the nature all around us.

Here, where the world is small.

Here, under the echoes of the night.

Here and now.

REGRESS

I can watch the days pass by.

I can sit and wait here.

Watching, waiting for you.

I have the patience.

There is no glory,

No gain from all these time;

All the time I wasted.

Without you, now I’m in regress.

I can sail the world,

I can journey through cities,

Just to look for you;

Walking, searching for you.

I have the patience.

There is no happiness.

No purple flowers in our garden.

All those colors I took for granted;

Without you now, they fade away.

I can fly too

If you want me to,

Just tell me what to do.

I find myself waiting, searching for you.

Patience, I’ve got, but it runs out too.

A COLLISION OF DREAMS (REPRISE/ENDING)

The stars shone for us.

That night, when the worlds collided;

The stars congratulated us.

How lonely could a journey get?

Trapped in a dream,

Lost in the never fading night sky,

How lonely did you get?

The stars shone for us,

The stars of a clearer brighter night sky.

Have you see a horizon so beautiful?

Drenched in rain that night,

You saved me by your pain.

The intensity

Of everything you’ve been through.

In the water, fading away yourself,

Under the great sky and on the land below;

You saved me.

The memories will never leave us.

That night, when the stars shone for our touch.

We knew each other the moment our eyes met;

The breeze will forever carry on the mystery.

Falling miles through the air,

I lent you my strength.

All my hopes and dreams,

All my words, all those memories,

In the water,

They saved you too.

In between the worlds;

We saved each other that night.

The stars, oh, how they spoke to us.

We didn’t want to breathe,

We just wanted to drown in the fantasy.

You took back your pain

For the love we felt.

Now lend me the strength,

Lend me my strength,

For everything;

All the dreams and promises

Must come to an end.

We’ll never forget;

That significance of the joy we felt,

That night when the worlds collided.

That night, when our dreams became one.

WHAT THE WORLD UNLEASHES IN US

Stand in the cover of the night.

The darkness can show you the way too;

Given a while the sky glitters, illuminating a map.

Listen to the music of the trees,

Hear the secrets of the wind.

Maybe you can be as blessed too;

Maybe we could let ourselves free too (one day).

Watch as the world takes a turn

And hear, in the silence, a hidden melody serene and beautiful.

Spy the freedom of the birds in the air,

And remind yourself that longing for it is not a crime.

Maybe you could have it too;

Maybe we could all fly away too (one day).

Let the warmth of the day wash upon your face.

Let the light dry your worries

And take the dreaded step.

With me, this should be easy.

Let the world take another turn,

Setting free those wings you never knew you had.

Looking on below you

At the mirror of water beneath us,

The sun's last moments on your face,

As we fly away together

In the freedom we now cherish.

THE GRASP OF TIME (FROM ‘THE GATEWAY TO YOU’)

Time catches us greedily,

For we long for time.

And it flows through us,

In our blood; the emotions.

And time must be used wisely,

For it flows on beside us,

Neither hurting no protecting.

Time is infinite, though you are not.

JOHNAN - extended

From LEAP OF THE RED LEOPARD

I am life for those in need

I am your darkest ally for those who seek

And beware, for I bring pain to those who cross me

Above all, I am the predator to those unprepared

I am not a king

Nor am I the compassionate one

And I will not be the one to pity you

I am just a heartless peasant with a gun

ONE LAST WISH - extended

From LEAP OF THE RED LEOPARD

I want to see grassy lands,

Feel the spring breeze,

Take a long walk,

And find a place where I’m at peace.

I want to take those baby steps;

Feel the joy of not being able to worry,

Run around with a smile

And grow up all over again.

I want to go back to those days;

When I felt the love,

Heal in their care,

And live in that dream.

I want to live;

And find a place where I’m at peace.

I want to live;

And grow up all over again.

And in that dream;

I want to live.

GIFTED TRAVELERS - PREVIEW (BONUS)

From THE LIGHT’S ADVENT

Awaken from your descent

Slaves of the world

Of the kings and queens and those that came before and after

Rise from the stones

Those that armor you from the blood and water

Open your well-rested eyes

Arise from the quietude

And find within yourself a single memory

And find in your heart a vile desire

You are but clay to be molded

Yet you will choose your path

You will collect them

The pasts of those who are no more

For memories are what makes you

They are the rasps and the rifflers

Follow your desires

And you shall come upon those you cannot be without

Out of crystals and iron only did they become whole

They shall be yours to wield

For what is a soldier without his weapons?

WHEN DREAMS AWAKEN

Alan Winston, a teenager haunted by nightmares and hallucinations ever since an incident left him traumatized, starts dreaming about a girl he had never seen before but for whom he somehow feels strongly for. Before he realizes it, he finds himself getting his life back together, as his fragmented memory slowly starts to make sense.

GET IN TOUCH WITH AFFAN ALI

Conversations are never-ending;

Our words can only mean so much,

Our actions can only speak so much.

It’s unwise to stop at either.

Either way one leads to the other;

A cycle of love or hate – or both.
