CHIANTI

when I don’t want to face the page

I write poetry

at least I pretend to write poetry

I place words

the desk is scattered with pages

I rearrange

the piles ebb like the ocean

I lie

not created or destroyed

I

SELF-DECEPTION

on the stoop the words appear in my mind

I don’t write them down because I believe the lie

they will be there when I sit down to write

UNSOLICITED

“you should write poetry

your stories read poetic”

so I wrote poetry

“your poems read like stories

have you ever tried writing stories?”

is when I stopped writing

for others

and started writing for me.

critics have a way

of mixing a person up

so I figure

if someone comments one way or the other

it usually means you are on to something.

woah. now that’s something

to get worried about.

PERSPECTIVE

i.

i found the same issues with your books as i found with the draft of your chapbook, a lack of concreteness (and specifics). some sessions with a good editor could help. you need the right editor.

ii.

Andrew, I’ve been reading the two books I got from you last week and, as a former poetry editor of a literary magazine, a judge of poetry contests, and a fellow poet, I am writing to tell you I’m impressed. Many of your pieces are very well executed.

iii.

I did not respond to Amanda.

iv.

I thanked Gary for his note.

v.

Specifically, Amanda is a cunt.

MUCH STIMULUS THESE DAYS

it’s hard to sit here

with the blank page

not for lack of words

they come easy enough

it’s the distractions

how’s a man supposed

to get anything accomplished?
