A Little Help, Please

In the world of the small indie press we fight a never-ending battle for attention to our work, as writers and in publishing. Here’s an example: big publishers [you know who they are] have gobs of $$$ that they can devote to advertising and marketing. Here at Alban Lake, our advertising budget consists of the deposits for whatever soda bottles and aluminum cans we can find alongside the highways. Anti-littering laws make our task even more difficult . . .

That’s where YOU come in. YOU are our best promoter. YOU are the one who can tell others about us. Just send ‘em to our website, tell them about our store. That’s all. Just that.

Of course, we don’t mind if you talk us up. We’re pretty good, you know. We have some award-winning and award-nominated writers and artists, plus other voices well-deserving to be heard [not everyone wins awards, right?] but our publications are read-worthy nevertheless.

This begins our 16th year at Scifaikuest! In the beginning, when Scifaikuest was just taking shape, I was told that most start-up magazines don't last two years. And here we are, celebrating our sixteenth anniversary! This is all due to both our talented contributors and our loyal readers—YOU!

We began with scifaiku and tanka, and then ventured into the wider universe of sijo, cinquain, luna, fibonacci, and many other newer forms of minimal poetry, including haibun and the poem/pictures: haiga. Today, we publish, or have published, 36 different minimal poetic forms.

Thank you all so much for your support during our birth and expansion, and for ultimately making Scifaikuest a world-wide phenomenon. Over the past 15 years, we've had contributions from: Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, England, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, México, Netherlands, New Zealand, Philippines, Poland, Romania, Scotland, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Thailand, United States, Wales—and the planet of Boort. And now, Croatia, Iran and Southern Cameroons have been added to our list of contributors' homes!!!!

If you don’t have a subscription to our PRINT edition, they are available at:

You may notice that our awesome COVER ARTWORK seems very similar to our ONLINE DOOR in this ANNIVERSARY issue. That is because both illustrations were done by our illustrious artist, Denny Marshall. If you look closely, you will see that these pictures are NOT the same, and have very subtle differences.

You can view our ONLINE VERSION at:

And, if you would like to join the select group of contributors by submitting your poetry, artwork or article, you can find our guidelines at: guidelines-scifaikuest/

As always, a huge Scifaikuest WELCOME to our newest contributors: Husain Abdulhay, N. Muma Alain, Worr Barr, Maria DePaul, Kyle Hemmings, Joshua Hiles, Nick Hoffman, Sandra J. Lindow aka sandi, Kate Lisinska, Dian Duchin Reed, Ann Christine Tabaka, and Tamara K. Walker.

And now, let us to continue to explore minimal genre poetic forms, as we go along on another Scifaikuest!
