Tiger

Why we entered is a mystery,

the darkness cloying,

footsteps falling,

still and dank inside of me.

My gleeful friends all stand entranced,

the cavernous space, the shadow dance,

the quality of light and sound,

unworldlyness of what we've found.

They turn exploring crack and crevice,

heart of darkness, roof and eldritch.

While eerie sullen echoes eddy

my quiv'ring legs have turned to jelly!

The shadows there slide crouchingly,

softly dreadful, silently.

Growing now behind my friends,

gliding closer still.

I warn and yell emotionally,

appeal to their humanity,

implore old gods from history,

but no one turns or looks!

My companions are realists, better still, idealists.

They know no sane authority

with principled morality

would let free tigers liberally, without both guard and leash!

The patina pool coils chillingly,

bunching, starved, ferocity,

with ghastly muscles sliding slow

all guile and roused intent.

I weep a warning constantly.

I point and wave and shout and plead,

but my companions laughingly,

cannot believe the threat!

They tell me what a fool I've been.

They call me leftie, loon and green.

They sell me lies and lethargy,

and will not see our doom!

The tiger now is eating them

it eats them whole face bones and bum!

And while it gnaws and chews on them,

they hoot and laugh with glee!

And when it's done digesting them

it will take a rest and then,

all glowing eyes and razor fangs ...

… it will come for me!
