Happy New Years

Copyright 12-28-2018

Steve Lake

Be it tradition or a curse

Man has found a way to give it worth

To elevate it beyond the calendar pages

Another day to play

It only comes once a year

Upon it we stand and cheer

Wrapped in a cyclone of spirits

A moment to steal a forbidden kiss

24 hours of endless bliss

Just two complete rotations of the clock

Last year into the New Year we rock

We bid ado to the old

Only to be relived in lore of our campfire told

Like wheeling a giant pencil eraser

Applying it to last year's mistakes

Not etched but stenciled upon stone

Rewritten as bygones

Black eye peas for good luck

Champaign like cold duck

Sweetheart or fantasy in hand

Five minute away notification from the band

Like an old shivaree of newlyweds

For hours we purge the memories from our heads

All in preparations of that new day

To be cleansed in a magical way

Then the countdown is on

From 10 to zero we are all impaired

Last's year's thoughts now running all scared

Call it the New Year's Eve purge

To rid yourself of your scourge

Then the ball is lit

Descending to earth like an atomic bomb

With its invisible explosion

A shockwave granting us all the power to be reborn

All eyes focused on a new year adorned

Be it a blessing or a curse

We dwell in its value giving it worth

The masses now travel the path of pledges

All of the stones written in pencil

Man now waits April fool's day

A day to reset the pledges they vie

So your wish is granted via blessing or curse

Happy New Year's

Happy Déjà vu

Happy rebirth

Or whatever excuse works for you!

To 2018 we all bid ado
